Walking Tour of All of Florence!

Here are a couple pictures, I didn't take them because they were so intense in the museum about not using cameras, but I want to show the Robert Mapplethorpe photo with the unfinished Michealangelo.

Today was a great day. We woke up, had poetry class, had a photography class, and then walked through all of Florence. We went to the Medici Palace, the Petti Palace, and many others. We went to the Accademia and saw Michealangelo's David Sculpture, and also his unfinished prisoner sculptures which our almost even more intense and beautiful. Also at this museum, I found a new photographer that I love, Robert Mapplethorpe. A lot of his photos focus on the body and intense muscle forms, and they had a special exhibit of his photos next to Michealangelo's sculptures, and it was a really cool comparison. At the end of the tour, Eugene bought us all gelato for being such a good class for the day, then my friend Scott and I went to a music store and played some really expensive guitars together, it was great until we got yelled at for not asking, then we left. I went back to the hotel , took a really long nap, then went and got a chicken doner Kebab, the closest I can get to a california burrito back home. They are so amazingly good haha. Then I took a lot of photos in my room with my friend John, and then everyone started doing photo shoots and stuff, it was really fun.

We really saw a lot of Florence already today, so I am excited to see what the rest of the week will be like!

  1. Chicken DONOR?? Did the chicken sign a waiver donating certain parts for your dining pleasure?? Sorry - it's truly the first thing that popped in my mind. I can hardly wait to see all of these things! I hope you're making a list of what you're going to show us!

  2. Some believe that the Michelangelo prisoners, or slaves, are not unfinished, but are intended to show forms "imprisoned" in the sculptor's block. This goes along nicely with Michelangelo's statement that he didn't carve figures into marble, he liberated them out of it. And although I got thoroughly sick of Mapplethorpe in the 1980's, the photo you chose to show does fit well with that theme, i.e. a well-formed body trapped in its surroundings.

And, yes, nice song. I prefer a different version.

  3. That does sound like an awesome day. I like that you're with a bunch of people who love photography, art, and music. (and yeah, I don't know what chicken donor or chicken doner are. Neither one made sense, although I do like Mom's theory). My friend from SAIC grew up in Florence. You've met her, but you were too young to know much about it. She'd love to talk about her home town with you, I'm sure. Thanks for posting another update so soon. You must have good access to the Internets in Florence. :)
